Have your Wedding Dress retailer alter it for you

If you were buying from a retailer, you could choose to have their seamstress make the alterations. All dress retailers offer this service if you buy in the store with them. Yes, it costs extra, and yes, it can be expensive, but knowing your dress is in the hands of a capable person who will not destroy it, brings peace of mind that you can’t get elsewhere. Retailers know it is worth every cent to have your dress handled with care by someone who has a passion for making brides look beautiful on their big day, and you know the dress will fit properly once they are done.

Hire a separate alteration service

Certain fabrics need to be tailored by someone with experience with that fabric. Don’t ask your aunt or that girl that designs costumes to handle a silk Carmeuse gown if they don’t even know what that fabric is. There is no law saying you must order alterations from your wedding dress retailer, but you should always hire a professional to do any alterations for you. This is especially true of gowns you order online.

Ordering online- here’s how

If you do order online you should have a professional tailor measure you. That same tailor can help bring things in if it doesn’t fit correctly once you get your gown. Check the sizing chart on the gown before buying it and don’t assume that all charts will be the same, even in the same collection or company. Sizes vary per dress so always check out what the manufacturer and other customer reviews have to say about the gown.

Always order a dress one size larger.

Other tips

  • Are you planning to lose weight for the big day?… Hmm….you may want to consider order a dress one size larger than that dream size you have in mind. You can take a dress in, but you can’t let one out and even if you do plan to lose weight, you may not.
  • Buy your undergarments for your dress early on so that you know you have the right pieces and that they fit correctly under the gown.
  • If you love a gown and it is strapless, but you can’t wear strapless, don’t despair! A good tailor can put straps on a strapless dress to make it just what you want it to be. Keep in mind this will cost extra, but If you are willing to pay extra then this is the way to get the dress you want.

Ordering and fitting schedule

Once you have chosen your gown you need to have your ordering and fitting schedule laid out.

Your initial fitting happens when you order the dress. Often this is at least six months before the wedding. Bring all of your undergarments and the shoes you’ll be wearing to this fitting so the tailor knows just what you will be working with the day you put the dress on.

Your next fitting happens about 6 weeks before the wedding to make sure the wedding dress alterations have been done correctly and to ensure you haven’t gained or lost too much weight.

Finally, the week before your wedding there will be a final fitting to tie up any last minute tweaks. When you find your dress, it is important to follow this schedule as closely as you can so that your alterations are done correctly and the tailor is not rushed. And of course you are relaxed and can enjoy the process..
